7 Signs Your West Chicago Home Needs a Handyman Before Winter Hits

I know — it's summer. You're not thinking about winter. But after 30+ years of fixing things for homeowners across West Chicago, Carol Stream, Bolingbrook, and the rest of the western suburbs, I can tell you with confidence: the homeowners who call me in October are paying two to three times more than the ones who called me in August.

Illinois winters are genuinely hard on homes. The freeze-thaw cycle cracks concrete, expands gaps in caulking, damages gutters, and turns small leaks into expensive water damage. The good news is that most of the damage is predictable — and these seven signs will tell you if your home needs attention before the cold arrives.

Sign 1: Your Gutters Are Pulling Away from the Fascia

Gutters that are starting to sag or separate from the house aren't just an eyesore — they're a water management failure waiting to happen. When snow and ice accumulate in a gutter that's pulling away, the weight accelerates the damage and pushes water toward your foundation and siding instead of away from it.

What to do: have them re-secured and cleaned before the first freeze. If the fascia board behind the gutter is soft or rotted, that needs to be addressed at the same time.

Sign 2: Drafts Around Doors and Windows

Hold your hand near the edges of your exterior doors and windows on a windy day. If you feel air movement, you're losing heated air all winter long — and paying for it on your energy bill. Weatherstripping degrades every year, and caulk shrinks and cracks with temperature changes.

This is one of the highest-ROI repairs a homeowner can make before winter. A few hours of caulking and weatherstripping replacement can cut heating costs noticeably — and it costs almost nothing to do.

Sign 3: You Have Any Outdoor Water Faucets That Drip

A dripping outdoor faucet (hose bib) in November is a burst pipe waiting to happen. Water left in an exterior line freezes, expands, and can split the pipe inside your wall — which you won't discover until the thaw, when water starts pouring out of your wall.

The fix is simple and inexpensive: repair the faucet before winter, and make sure you know where your shutoffs are for each exterior faucet so you can drain the lines before the first hard freeze.

Sign 4: Deck Boards Are Soft or Boards Are Lifting

Summer is deck season, but winter is when deck damage accelerates. Water gets into cracked or damaged boards, freezes, expands, and splits them further. A deck board that's soft underfoot or slightly elevated now will be significantly worse — and potentially dangerous — by spring.

Replacing a few boards before winter is a morning's work. Replacing a significant portion of a deck after winter damage has spread is a multi-day job at substantially higher cost.

Sign 5: You Haven't Cleaned Your Gutters Since Last Fall

If your gutters haven't been cleaned since fall 2025, they're full. A winter of ice and snow sitting on decomposing organic matter in your gutters is a recipe for ice dams — a condition where ice forms at the roof edge and backs water up under your shingles and into your attic or walls.

Ice dam remediation is expensive and disruptive. Gutter cleaning is not. Clean them in September before leaves fall, then again after the trees drop in November.

Sign 6: Interior Doors Are Sticking or Not Latching

A door that sticks in summer heat usually improves in winter — but a door that's not latching properly, or has visible gaps at the frame, may indicate a settling issue in your home's framing. That's worth having looked at before temperature extremes stress the structure further.

At minimum, a door that won't latch properly is a security vulnerability. At worst, it's an early sign of a structural shift. Either way, it shouldn't wait until spring.

Sign 7: You Have Cracks in Your Driveway or Front Walk

Concrete cracks are a serious winter liability. Water gets into the crack, freezes, expands, and makes the crack significantly larger. Cracks in a front walkway become trip hazards after a freeze-thaw cycle. Cracks in your driveway grow into potholes.

Concrete crack filler is inexpensive and takes an afternoon to apply. Driveway replacement costs several thousand dollars. The math is easy.
